Workshops

TOPS offers a variety of workshops at the TOPS Studio in Vancouver and in various locations throughout North America and beyond. Our workshops provide a safe, non-judgmental space that is open to everyone. No previous experience is required. In an effort to include all, many of our workshop fees are open to sliding-scale payment based on the participant's need– please contact us about the workshop you're specifically interested in. 

Classes are led by TOPS associates who are experienced working with people with back issues, particularly scoliosis. Our team of associates includes yoga, Pilates and dance instructors, life coaches, physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors and Tension and Trauma Release (TRE) providers.

Fusion Yoga: For fused, injured or post-surgical spines

'Fusion Yoga' explores new ways to work through the tightness, stiffness, fear and pain often experienced by people with surgically 'corrected' spines.

Gentle Fusion Yoga combines breathing, stretching, yoga asana, and simple dance movement to bring new awareness to flexibility, mobility and alignment. Based on Iyengar Yoga and Elise Browning Miller’s approach to Yoga for Scoliosis, Martha adds her own blend of breathing, meditation and freestyle movement to specifically address spinal fusion and how it affects the whole body.

Yoga Your Body, Dance Your Soul draws from both yoga and dance techniques to find new freedom in the body – physically, mentally, intellectually, and emotionally.

Come and join dance artists Heather Mah (dance, meditation, coaching) and Martha Carter (dance, yoga for scoliosis) for a week of deep bodywork and movement exploration. Discover and express your spirit with a wealth of creative movement through a dynamic combination of pranayama, asana, and dance, all taught in the beautiful beach studio of Yoga del Pacifico in Troncones, Mexico. You will feel rested, rejuvenated and inspired!

All levels welcome. No dance or yoga experience required.

MEALS
The delicious and healthy vegetarian meals will be created and served at the villa, and a few of the meals will be enjoyed at some of the local restaurants. Meat, poultry and fish options are available. We do our best to respect and offer everyone’s food preferences.

Martha Carter combines her experiences as a dance artist, scoliosis specialist and yoga teacher to share physical exercises that bring awareness, alignment, length and strength to the whole body. From Vancouver, Canada, Martha is the Director of Marta Marta Productions, and Twisted Outreach Project (TOPS). A certified Yoga Teacher, she holds a BA in Music, an MFA in Dance and teaches both dance, yoga and Stretch for Scoliosis in Vancouver and beyond.

Heather Mah brings a rich history of contemporary dance experience to guide participants towards greater body intelligence. Dance refines physical expression, the imagination, and releases each one's unique creative flow. A resident of Montreal Canada, Heather has performed as a contemporary dancer with international touring companies for over 20 years. She holds a BFA in performing arts, BA in psychology, and a certificate in personal coaching, and has been teaching her ‘Soul Dance’ technique in Montréal since 2011.

Martha Carter combine ses expériences en tant qu'artiste de danse, spécialiste de la scoliose et professeure de yoga afin de partager des exercices physiques visant à la prise de conscience, l'alignement, la longueur et la force de l'ensemble du corps. De Vancouver, Canada, Martha est directrice des Productions Marta Marta et de Twisted Outreach Project (TOPS). Professeure de yoga certifiée, elle détient un baccalauréat en musique, une maîtrise en danse, et elle enseigne la danse, le yoga et l'étirement pour la scoliose à Vancouver et ailleurs.

Grâce à son expérience approfondie et de ses vastes connaissances de la danse, du travail corporel et de la méditation, Heather Mah est en mesure de guider les participants vers une plus grande intelligence somatique. Elle a été danseuse contemporaine au sein de troupes de tournées internationales pendant plus de 30 ans. Depuis 2011, elle enseigne la méditation et le mouvement à divers endroits, notamment au Monastère des Augustines, un centre de bien-être à Québec.  BFA (danse), BA (psychologie), PPCC (coaching), enseignante certifiée de Yin-Yoga

Come and join acclaimed teacher and scoliosis specialist Deborah Wolk on the majestic west coast of Canada! Enjoy a revitalizing and rejuvenating 4-day retreat surrounded by the wild and natural ocean, rivers, mountains, ancient trees and wildlife of Salt Spring Island.

ABOUT THE DESTINATION: Salt Spring Island is known as the largest and most popular of the many gulf islands on the west coast of Canada. With its spectacular coastal and pastoral scenery, the island offers many outdoor activities, as well as the opportunity to explore dozens of artist studios and artisanal farms and markets. The workshop will be held in a private studio with accommodations close by. Salt Spring Island is a quick float plane ride from Vancouver International Airport. Or you can arrive via a stunning ferry ride from Vancouver or Victoria.

ABOUT DEBORAH: Having practiced yoga for her own scoliosis since 1994, Deborah has found that alignment-based yoga can control back pain and arrest the progression of the curvature and twist. She has been teaching students with scoliosis and other back conditions since 2000 in New York City, nationwide and in Europe and Asia. From 2007-2014 Deborah co-founded and served as co-Director of the successful Yoga Union Center for Backcare and Scoliosis. In January 2015 Deborah founded the workers' cooperative Samamkaya Yoga Backcare and Scoliosis Collective in Manhattan.
