About Martha Carter

As a therapeutic movement specialist for scoliosis and spinal fusions, Martha teaches Gentle Yoga, Somatics, and Scoliosis Wellness classes, workshops, and retreats for all ages and abilities in Canada, the USA, and internationally. She is a certified teacher of both Yoga for Scoliosis based on the teachings of Elise Browning Miller, and Essential Somatics™ based on the work of Thomas Hanna. She has also studied (and continues to enjoy explorations in) Pilates for Scoliosis, Energy Medicine, and Trauma Release techniques, which she weaves into all of her classes to help participants with pain relief while enhancing their movement potential. Martha is the founder and director of Twisted Outreach Project for Back Care and Scoliosis (TOPS), a Canadian-based non-profit that provides a range of holistic and creative approaches to working with back care and scoliosis. Martha’s full bio can be found here.

Martha will be teaching ‘Somatic Yoga for Scoliosis and Fusions’, a blend of gentle yet deep foundational movements using Yoga for Scoliosis, Essential Somatics™, and more.

Yoga for Scoliosis and Fusions offers a gentle approach for scoliotic spines that helps people breathe into their concavities, decompress their curves, derotate their twists, repattern their imbalances, reinforce new patterns, strengthen and stabilize weak areas, and in general feel better about their backs!

Somatics is a very gentle, and pleasurable approach to movement that leads to pain-free mobility. Based on the teachings of philosopher and movement theorist, Thomas Hanna, Somatics exercises are easy to enjoy for all levels and abilities, and it can be very effective very quickly.

NOTE: Discounted ‘bundle’ pricing if you register for a 5-class package OR for ALL 8 Spring classes.

Five steps to prepare for TOPS online classes:

1. Find a comfortable space on the floor for a yoga mat and a chair (with props close by if you like to use them such as blankets, blocks, bolsters, pillows, etc).

2. Wear loose clothing.

3. Place your device in a position where you can easily see the screen and yourself. TAKE NOTE: If you cannot see yourself on the mat, then the teacher cannot either (it's helpful to have the computer on a chair or small ladder that can be easily re-positioned if necessary).

4. Click on the ZOOM link from the invitation email you will receive to get to the meeting ‘waiting room’ and the teacher will allow you in starting up to 15 minutes before the class time.

5. Once in the meeting, you can select Martha’s video ‘box’ to either pin the video (for computers) or activate speaker (for iPads). Also, make sure your audio is working :).
